Living with Braces
Braces work 24/7, your daily routine helps them work faster and more comfortably. Here’s everything you need to know about eating, brushing, sports, soreness, and small fixes between visits.

Getting comfortable (first 7–10 days)
The first week is an adjustment period while your cheeks and lips get used to the brackets and wires. Mild soreness is common as teeth begin to move; a softer menu (soups, smoothies, eggs, pasta) and over-the-counter pain relief usually make things easy.
Orthodontic wax is your best friend! Dry the spot and press a small piece over any area that rubs until tissues toughen up.
You may also notice slight changes in speech at first; reading aloud for a few minutes a day speeds up adaptation.
Sip cool water, use a fluoride rinse if you like, and remember: every day gets more comfortable.
Eating & drinking

Brushing & flossing
Elastics (rubber bands)
Elastics are the engine that aligns your bite. Wear them exactly as prescribed, because consistent force, rather than “extra tightness”, is what delivers results. Change to fresh bands frequently so tension stays steady, and keep a few packets in your backpack, car, and bathroom. If you forget for a few hours, just put them back in, never “double up” to catch up. A quick photo of your elastic pattern on day one can help you remember how they’re worn between visits.

Sports, music & activities
Braces shouldn’t bench you from the things you love. For contact sports, a braces-friendly mouthguard cushions lips and protects brackets while letting teeth keep moving.
Musicians typically adapt within days; a touch of wax on early pressure points makes wind and brass instruments more comfortable.
If you’re traveling, toss a small kit in your bag: travel brush, toothpaste, floss threaders, elastics, wax, and a compact mirror; so you’re prepared anywhere.
Quick fixes at home
- Pokey wire: Dry the area and place wax. If needed, gently tuck the wire back with a clean pencil eraser.
- Loose bracket/band: If it’s attached, leave it; cover with wax. If it comes off, keep it and call us.
- Irritated spot: Rinse with warm saltwater (½ tsp salt in a cup of warm water).
- Broken elastic tie/chain: Not urgent. Call us to schedule a repair.

Appointment rhythm
Most braces check-ins happen every 6–10 weeks, but the exact cadence depends on your wire sequence and how your teeth are responding. At each visit, we’ll check progress, adjust wires or elastics, refresh ties or power chains, and review hygiene so everything stays healthy.
If you’re on track and comfortable, some appointments may be shorter or spaced out a bit more; if we need to accelerate or fine-tune movement, we’ll see you sooner. We can also use quick photo updates between visits if a question pops up. If you ever need to reschedule, just let us know: keeping momentum is important, and we’ll find the next best slot.
