Retainers

Retainers keep your teeth in their new positions after braces or aligners. Teeth naturally want to drift, especially in the first 12 months after treatment, so a clear, simple retainer plan protects your hard-earned result for the long term.

Why retention matters

  • 1

Stability: Ligaments and bone need time to adapt after tooth movement.

  • 2

Prevention: Daily forces (chewing, swallowing, nighttime clenching) can shift teeth.

  • 3

Simplicity: A comfortable retainer routine is the easiest way to keep your smile straight.

Retainer options we offer

  • Clear removable retainers (Essix-style): Thin, transparent trays that fit over your teeth: low profile and easy to wear at night.

  • Fixed/bonded retainer: A small wire bonded behind the front teeth (upper, lower, or both) for always-on stability. Often paired with a clear nighttime retainer.

  • Hawley (acrylic + wire): Durable, adjustable design; useful for specific cases or as a backup to clear retainers.
We’ll recommend the combination that best matches your bite, lifestyle, and long-term goals.

Your wear plan (typical)

  • 1

Right after treatment: Full-time wear for a short period, except when eating/brushing.

  • 2

Then nights only: Transition to nightly wear to maintain alignment.

  • 3

Long term: Expect to keep a nighttime habit indefinitely: simple, comfortable, and effective.

We’ll personalize this schedule for you and adjust over time.

Care & maintenance

  • Cleaning: Rinse after removal; brush gently with cool water and a soft toothbrush. (Avoid hot water that can warp plastic.)

  • Case always: Keep retainers in their case, never in a napkin or pocket.

  • Pets love them: Store out of reach, dogs especially!

  • Fixed retainers: Use floss threaders or a water flosser; we’ll show you how.

Replacements & backups

Life happens. If a retainer is lost, cracked, warped, or no longer fits: contact us quickly. Minor movement is easier to correct early, and we can scan for a replacement or discuss adjustments.

Bruxism & grinding

If you clench or grind at night, tell us. We can design a retainer plan (or separate night guard) that protects both your alignment and enamel.

FAQs: Retainers

Plan on nighttime wear long-term. Teeth can shift at any age; a simple nightly routine keeps your result stable.

Clear retainers are easy and invisible; fixed retainers provide “always-on” stability. Many patients use both: a fixed wire plus a clear nighttime tray.

Clear retainers may cause a slight lisp for a day or two. Most people adapt quickly, especially when worn at night

Rinse after removal and brush gently with cool water. Avoid heat, harsh cleaners, and dishwashers. We’ll share approved cleaning options at your visit.

Call us right away. Bring the retainer to your appointment; we’ll assess fit, scan if needed, and provide a repair or replacement plan.

It can. If you feel a rough edge or movement, contact us promptly to prevent unwanted shifting.

Possibly. We’ll evaluate your bite and recommend either a reinforced retainer or a dedicated night guard.

Coverage varies. We’ll provide a clear estimate and help you maximize any benefits.
