Orthodontics for Children & Early Treatment
Early orthodontic care is about more than straight teeth, it’s about guiding jaw growth, creating space for incoming teeth, protecting airway and bite function, and building a child’s confidence. At Gowda Orthodontics, we make early visits calm, educational, and family-friendly so kids (and parents!) know exactly what to expect. You’ll meet Dr. Shruthi Lakshmana, a board-certified orthodontist, and explore the most conservative path forward for your child.
Why early evaluations matter
Early orthodontic care is about more than straight teeth, it’s about guiding jaw growth, creating space for incoming teeth, protecting airway and bite function, and building a child’s confidence. What a first visit looks like
Some orthodontic issues are easier to correct while the jaws are still growing: think crowding, crossbites, under/overbites, impacted teeth risk, or habits like thumb-sucking. An early evaluation helps us decide whether to:
- Monitor growth with routine check-ins,
- Use a short, focused Phase 1 treatment to guide development,
- Or wait until the teen years for comprehensive care – no pressure, just the right timing for your child.
What a first visit looks like
Your first visit is relaxed and informative. We’ll chat about goals and concerns, take kid-friendly diagnostic records (photos, digital scans, and X-rays as appropriate), and discuss personalized options with clear next steps. You’ll leave knowing whether we recommend observation, an interceptive appliance, or simply a future check-in.

Comfortable, child-friendly technology
Say goodbye to goopy impressions. We use an iTero digital scanner for quick, comfortable 3D scans, along with modern imaging. 3D CBCT is not taken routinely, we recommend it only when truly necessary for diagnosis or treatment planning. Our A-dec chairs and welcoming reception area (with easy check-in and refreshments) help kids feel right at home.
Treatment options we may consider in Phase 1
- Growth-guiding appliances (e.g., expanders)
- Limited braces for specific tooth movement
- Space maintainers to protect room for adult teeth
- Habit appliances (thumb- or tongue-related)
- Clear aligner approaches when appropriate
Our goal is minimal treatment for maximum long-term benefit, and to set your child up for a shorter, simpler Phase 2 (or none at all).
