Mini Implants / Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs)

Sometimes teeth need a steady “handle” to move precisely. Mini implants, also called Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs), are tiny, titanium anchors that give braces or aligners a fixed point to pull against. They can shorten treatment time, improve accuracy, and make certain movements possible without extractions or headgear.

What is a TAD?

A TAD is a small, biocompatible pin placed gently in the gum and bone between teeth. It serves as a stable anchor for elastics or wires, then is removed when no longer needed. It’s temporary, safe, and designed for comfort.

When we recommend TADs

  • Correcting challenging bite issues (open bite, deep bite, crossbite)

  • Moving single teeth or small groups without affecting neighbors

  • Closing spaces efficiently or intruding/extruding teeth with control

  • Avoiding extractions or jaw surgery in select cases

How placement works (quick & comfortable)

  • Numbing gel (and local anesthetic if needed).

  • Placement in minutes. Most patients feel only light pressure.

  • Attach elastic/coil/wire. Tooth movement begins right away.

  • Simple care. Keep the area clean; brief tenderness fades quickly.

Living with a TAD

  • Eating: You can eat normally, but avoid picking at the site.

  • Brushing: Clean gently around the TAD; a soft brush or cotton swab helps.

  • Activities: Sports and daily life are unaffected. Use a mouthguard for contact sports as usual.

  • Check-ins: We’ll monitor stability and adjust your mechanics as teeth move.

Removal

When the job is done, the TAD is unscrewed in seconds, typically with only topical numbing. No stitches. Most patients say removal is even easier than placement.

Are TADs safe?

Yes. TADs are made from medical-grade titanium and are used worldwide in orthodontics. On the rare chance a TAD loosens, we can reposition or replace it quickly.

FAQs: Mini Implants / TADs

Most patients feel brief pressure; we use numbing gel and, if needed, local anesthetic. Mild soreness is normal for a day or two.

Typically a few months, depending on the tooth movement needed. We remove it as soon as it has done its job.

Occasionally. If it does, contact us. We’ll stabilize, reposition, or replace it to keep treatment on track.

Placement is planned with digital records and careful technique to avoid roots and vital structures.

Brush gently with a soft brush. A cotton swab or interdental brush and an alcohol-free mouth rinse can help keep the area spotless.

It’s small and low-profile. You may feel it with your tongue initially; most people forget it’s there after a day or two.

Both. TADs can enhance mechanics for either aligners or braces when extra anchorage is beneficial.

Sometimes, depending on the movement required. We’ll outline the plan and costs before we start.
